Kempsey is a cute little riverside town in the centre of the NSW north coast. Natural beauty is all over its doorstep! National parks and glorious sunny beaches are just waiting for your squeals and admiration. A chilled out kind of getaway just off the buzzing Pacific Highway, Kempsey is also the perfect halfway stop for a picnic and a sunbake between Sydney and Brisbane. Book your Kempsey accommodation with us today and live every lastminute.
If you consider yourself a vintage gal you will just love the gorgeous old buildings in Kempsey. The Victorian courthouse and the High Victorian post office will draw you in and give you a taste of the local history without you even realising it! To get the low down on the town today, the visitor information centre should be your first stop. Pick up some maps and advice and before you know it, you’ll know Kempsey like the back of your manicured hand!
Also rich in Aboriginal history, don’t forget to explore another side of the town’s past. The Wigay Aboriginal Culture Park unfolds the stories and customs of the Dunghuttii people, who originally occupied the area. You never know what tips you could take home! Learn about native plants used for food, medicine and shelter, kick off your shoes and dance to a didgeridoo demonstration, or kick back and listen to a gum leaf song rendition (not sure if they do Katy Perry though).
But let’s be honest – the main reason you came to Kempsey was to indulge in all the pretty scenery, right? Take the Tamban Forest Scenic Drive, which winds through three nearby state forests – or if you’d rather trample along some tracks (don’t forget to pack your joggers girls), then get out and explore the many national parks nearby. Even the unadventurous will love Willi Willi National Park. Here you’ll wander through rainforests, trail alongside the river and wind up at a sparkling waterfall and plunge pool that’s sure to make your friends envious when you post the pic on Facebook.
If you’d prefer to be laying horizontally soaking up the days, head to the coastal town of South West Rocks, which is just 30 minutes away. A quaint seaside town, there are many beaches on its doorstep to bask in all day long. Whether you’re a swimmer or a surfer, you will love the protected waters of Killick Beach, also just a short drive away. A National Surfing Reserve, it has drawn surfers in droves since the 1950s with one of the longest point breaks in Australia. To watch the blue seas disappear into the horizon, explore Arakoon National Park or Hat Head National Park for superb views across over the ocean.
